Standing at 1,916 meters (6,286 feet), Rincón de la Vieja is an active andesitic volcano located in the north-western region of Costa Rica. It’s known for its dramatic eruptions, fumaroles, and hot springs, making it a unique destination. The legend behind its name, "The Old Woman’s Corner," tells the story of Princess Curabanda, who lived on the slopes of the volcano, casting her son into the crater in a tragic act of love and sacrifice. The volcano, active as recently as June 2021, is an iconic natural feature in Rincón de la Vieja National Park.
